After a small wait the several hundred assembled to hear Premier Dalton McGuinty announce his provinces $416 million towards  204 street cars for the Toronto Transit Commission was met with loud applause.    “ It is a pleasure to be here. The most important people here are the workers who make a world class product. In honour of your excellent
work you can have the rest of the day off. Just check with Ron ( plant manager) first,” laughed Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario.” We are pulling together with the city of Toronto and are always at our best when we pull together. It is a win win situation for all with jobs here
in Thunder Bay and improvements for the Toronto transportation system. Bill Mauro was a champion for this project and never gave up. He was a driving force. You built airplanes when we were at war and now you build street cars.”

Also on hand for the announcement and with a contribution of $355 million in hand was David Miller, Mayor of Toronto. “  I got calls every single day from your Mayor Lynn Peterson asking if we had the money. Every single street car in Toronto since 1965 has been built
right here in Thunder Bay. Governments are working together to stimulate the economy. The recession has taken its toll particularly in Northern Ontario. We want to create jobs in this country. We can be assured of the quality of the cars built here in Thunder Bay. The subways cars are state of the art and fantastic.” said David Miller.
“ We will have a competitive advantage with the new car development here which will allow for more contracts in the future ,” said Bill Mauro, MPP Thunder Bay Atikokan. This is the greatest single challenge we have faced since the great depression but we are up to it and will
find a way to do our best. We will come together to do what ever it takes said Premier Dalton McGuinty.
The final aspect of the contract is the Federal contribution of over $400 million. Hopefully this will have been announced by the time you are reading this article.
