90Th Fire Fighters Ten Mile

The 90Th Fire Fighters Ten Mile Road Race!

by Scott A. Sumner

Since 1910 the Fire Fighters Ten Mile Road Race has been held in Thunder Bay. It is the longest standing 10 mile road race in Canada. The weather this year, May 18th, was overcast at about 10° with some rain earlier in the day, but the Thunder Bay firefighters 10 mile road race is always exciting to see.

ten-3

It takes a route from the the downtown southward to the waterfront Prince Arthur's Landing area of Thunder Bay and back down Water Street. This year there were over 1000 participants including open category, relay races and the adaptive category.

Watching the runners go by from my vantage point at the Intercity Shopping Center, you could see that the participants were smiling after probably already achieving 8 miles at this point. The runners were from all ages groups and having fun.

The quickest, male and female runners were Jett Dobson at 51:46.8 and Corrina Whybourne at 1:02.40.2- very impressive results.

This is another excellent event signature event for Thunder Bay that also can signal the beginning of a new season with summer coming up, the grass greening and the winter over- we hope. This year I wore my winter coat and toque, but the weather was ideal for runners with overcast and cool conditions.

This is a great event to see and shows the spirit of Thunder Bay well!
