There was  much pride in the air at a news conference event to announce a large contribution from the Northern Cancer Research Foundation to the Linda Buchan Centre at  the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Sue Hughes is Vice Chair of Northern Cancer Research Foundation, a medical radiation technologist at the Hospital and a clinical  instructor for Confederation College program.
“ We at the Northern Cancer Research Foundation have given a grant to the Linda Buchan Centre of $460,000. The money was used to purchase  additional viewing stations for the radiologists to use. It is a  special type of monitor that has a very high resolution. Each monitor
is $150,000  and makes the difference in mammography as the grades are so fine in the breast,” noted Sue Hughes. “ The money comes primarily from the Hope Classic Curling held each year. In the last 10 years they have raised $1.3 million dollars, which is tremendous , hence the centre  is called the Linda Buchan Centre.”

“ Ministries have to divide up their dollars each year and we can fill in the gap that happens in the system with donations like these. I  have been a patient and gone through the system. That was my  involvement and why I got on the  Northern Cancer Research Foundation
board. This facility in Thunder Bay, with our stations here and the mobile screening unit is state of the art and as good as anywhere in Canada,”   noted Hughes. “ The residents of NW Ontario are getting agreat service. You are better off here as the wait times are so low.  Thunder Bay is leading edge and has one of the most modern facilities in Canada. In NW Ontario we have quite a larger incidence of breast  cancer based on per capita but we usually have longer survival rates. We also have access to clinical trials. What we are doing here is
incredible.”
Debora Trokopich- Buzzi has lived in Thunder Bay for the last 10  years and is a breast cancer survivor. “  The treatment here has been  phenomenal- just a wealth of information and strength.  They have  fantastic equipment so they can diagnose things with precision and in
record time,” noted Debora Trokopich-Buzzi. “  My family doctor did a  mammogram and ultrasound and discovered something a little irregular.   From there I went to the Linda Buchan Centre for a core biopsy and I learned of my fate- breast cancer. You are pretty upset but I
researched the area on the internet and it put me in touch with Judy Drainville at the Linda Buchan Centre.”
“  The technicians were excellent and treated me with compassion. I  had chemotherapy  which was difficult but  you do what you have to do. I was told to embrace chemotherapy  by my Oncologist and now I have moved on with my life. I had reconstructive surgery and am looking
forward to getting on with things. I feel awesome and am going back to work at Intercity Shopping Centre as a Revenue Coordinator.”
