Recently Lakehead University held an open house in the Agora to expose their growing number of Masters and PHD programs to both current students and those from the community. Is Muhammad is in the MA Economics program and from Pakistan. “ I picked LU as it is one of the cheaper universities in Canada and I got a big scholarship. It is almost free for me, with $15000 in funding for the first year. I got 94% in my first semester here, highest in my department,”  smiled Muhammand. “ Thunder Bay is a pretty good to be. It is peaceful,
calm and cool. I stayed in Toronto for three days before coming here and life was so hectic there. Here it is so peaceful and calm and I love the nature. It is a perfect place to live.”
Muhammad is planning to go for his PhD if I he gets a visa extension and may become a consultant or professor.

Timothy Harding has been an Asst Professor of Business at LU for 2 1/2 half years. Originally from Southern Ontario he completed his Doctorate in Australia, Masters at U of Victoria and Undergraduate degrees at Western and U of Toronto. The 38 year old met his wife who is from Sault Ste Marie and they have a 2 year old and 6 year old. “ We are happy to be in Thunder Bay. The quality of life is a big draw,” smiled Timothy Harding. “  It is a small co-operative atmosphere here with only 11 students in the many of our Master’s classes. We are a research based program so the student is required to produce a piece of research. We as a faculty like to work with the students. In our course side of things you get about 10 courses in finance , law, etc. You use that information to do research which is peer and faculty reviewed.”
The business school at Lakehead University has 18 full time Masters students and quite a few part timers. All of their courses are in the evening so the part time students can attend and add so much to the classes. The total cost to attend the 1 year program is $17,500 and a
Canadian student can apply for government assistance or from your employee. A large percentage of the students will stay here. The research stream of students may leave the city.
Missy Teatero, is a first year Masters student in Clinical Phycology at LU with an undergraduate degree from UWO. “ They offered me quite a bit of funding and had some research areas of interest so I came to Lakehead. I hope to go on to the PhD program here and register
with the College of Phycologist of Ontario and have a private practice,” noted Missy Teatero. “ It is a really great program. We are tight knit and there is a good selection of courses. I will probably will stay in Thunder Bay when I complete the training.”There are 7 students in each year for 14 in total. A Psychiatrist goes to medical school and specializes in phycology and can prescribe medications where Phycologists can not prescribe medications. The PhD
is three years of course work and 1 year of internship.Jessica Johnson, is a second year clinical masters student. The PHD was LU’s first PHD program. “ We have clinical and mental health and research programs which require 400 hours practical work at the Masters
level and 600 at the PHD level. I will be a mental health work in the community.”
Mike Westner, PHD from Chicago is the Director of Experimental Program- Basic Applied Research at LU.  In his program many will become professors or in industry.Ed Rawane got his PHD from the U of Waterloo. “ I lived here in Thunder Bay as a teenager and came back home.In our clinical program the PHDs are in very high demand. One of our recent graduates is a professor at York and other graduates work in hospitals, health centers and are dependent practioneers.”
