Dirt Track Racing in Thunder Bay- Thunder City Speedway and KBMX in One Week!
by Scott A. Sumner
The third week in August was a good one for me to see some racing action locally at two venues!
I have always enjoyed many forms of motosport racing including especially Formula 1 and Snocross. For many years I attended Indycar racing in Toronto and ISOC Snocross racing in Duluth. Right in our own backyard I was able to see some excellent stock car dirt track racing at Thunder City Speedway only minutes from my home.
This racing was very impressive with some very competitive action on track. The quality of the local events held weekly have even attracted some US drivers who seem to be full time race car drivers. Thunder Bay has some ultra competitive drivers and there are thousands of spectators each week.
The Kakabeka KBMX motocross track was developed by the late Brian Vanlenthe, and still offers some races each summer. What is always fun for me is to see all ages of riders and their families out and enjoying the day. The emphasis seems to be on young riders coming up in the sport. There was some very competitive races in the junior classes with good lap times.
It's the summer break in Formula 1 and I look forward to the intense coverage by Sky Sports for the remaining races of the season where McLaren has a good stronghold as a team and with their two drivers- Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri!
Also the Snocross season is coming up in December and should prove to be a very competitive season with races all across North America with the brands Ski Doo, Polaris and a resurgent Arctic Cat with new ownership this year!
