Gail  Vaz Ox- Lade was born in Jamaica, came to Canada at 17 and  has been here ever since. The outgoing financial expert has hosted her own show on money management on the Slice and Global television markets for the last 8 years and was on hand at the PARO Smart Women, Smart Money event held recently
“ The episodes run over and over and people watch it again and again to learn more each time. The show helps people manage their financial affairs properly. I am determined to help who I am working with on the show and  that appeals to people. The basic message is don’t spend more money than you make, save something, if you have consumer debt get it paid off quickly and  have the right kind and enough insurance and an emergency fund. These are the Gail Rules. “ smiles Gail  Vaz Ox- Lade.

Gail started off designing the curriculum to train financial people on RRSP’s.  She  then wrote a book on RRSPs, because  she knew them so well, and then wrote for magazines like Chatelaine and the Globe & Mail. “ The TV show came along and they wanted me. It was on 8 seasons with 104 shows and the demand has been so great we are going back into production for 15 more shows this year. The families apply  to be on the show and we then do interviews  to see if they are camera friendly. Then their paper work is sent to me to see if we have something to work with,” notes Vaz Ox- Lade. “ We come to their home with a film crew and tell them what I have seen in the 6 months of their paper work which shows what they spend etc. We tell them what they do wrong. Of the the first 208 people I worked with on television  only 1 person knew where the money was going. They use credit cards, LOC or overdrafts so they have the ability to overspend. A lot of credit has dried up now though and interest rates are skyrocketing. The financial institutions have raised their LOC rates even though generally interest rates have remained low. There are credit cards in the US that have raised rates as high as 36%. The usury rate in Canada is 59% but pay day loan companies charge  700 to 1000 % interest. They do this by charging 59% plus the rest in service charges and fees.”
On the show “ Til Debt Do Us Part” if the people follow the plan from Gail they get $5000. It does require hard work but if you are determined to change your circumstances you get the reward. Some people can’t follow through according to Gail.
“ 85% of the TV  cases get they have done something wrong and they now know how to get out of the problem,” states Vaz Ox- Lade who has written a book on the subject. “  Mortgage debt is good debt if you can afford the payments. A house is a good investment but you can’t get too big a mortgage if the rates go up though. You need to find balance and not put yourself in harms way. The book has sold 50,000 in the first 4 months. We can change people lifes. In theh TV episodes more people got the message from me than I did in my writing in the past 20 years. Maybe the jars are a good idea. I created a web site with the interactive budget tools that are free of charge. If you need motivation read my blog on the site.”
“ Today’s event  is all about helping women make more money in their business, start a business, grow a business or find a job. It is about helping them once they get the money to know that the ownership responsibly of the money is with them and they should take control of
that money. Learn to invest and spend wisely,” said Roslalind Lockyer Executive Director of PARO Smart Women Smart Women. “  We have 200 women on site today and 17 communities participating by video conference on the  K Net or Contact North. Canada has the highest debt
so we need to listen to Gail and manage our money. We did research with the women and complied that women needed economic literacy, what we call Paronomics. It is the  psychology of money, what we do now and how do we motivate ourselves to do what we should do.”
“ Women have huge leadership skills as we do it without being authoritarian. We need to work together and support ourselves. We need to encourage people to reach their potential. This is a wonderful day for PARO. We are happy with the video conferencing to reach more people economically. We have the PARO van as well but the video really helps us reach more women by technology.” said Lockyer.
